Position Paper Round One, Pre-Hibernation

Hello World!

Today, we are gearing up for MUN hibernation during winter break. We are heading towards the new year, which means we are getting closer and closer to the spring conference! Our delegates are doing a great job of turning in their position papers, all which we will finish reviewing this week before break!

The position papers have turned out very well, as it is easy to tell that our delegates are knowledgeable as well as very interested in the issues of their countries. Even though we were not selected for a "Big Five" country this year, each and every one of our countries are very important and influential to the conference, which is why the position papers are so important. All in all, so far so good for the position papers process.

We are moving on to room assignments, and will have to start pairing people up for housing at the conference. This process should have very few mishaps, and hopefully everything should go quite smoothly. We are excited and appreciative for being able to stay in the Broadway Inn again this year. Since the conference has moved from the University of Oregon campus to the Hilton Hotel, we are closer to the actual conference than we were before! This will make transferring delegates back and forth between the conference just that much easier.

We have the opportunity this year to make really cool t-shirts for our delegates. We have personalized them, each student being able to select a name of their choosing for the back. They will be full sleeves once again this year, very cozy looking. Thanks to CustomInc, the process of making t-shirts has been very easy. We have been working for the past couple of months on an affordable design and are all very excited about the outcome.

Everything seems to be going very well so far, and we are getting more and more excited for the spring conference as the new year approaches and the MUN preparation process gets underway. Now we are just hoping that our delegates will take some time during winter break to work on their second position papers! Then, we will be ready for position paper grading round two.

Happy Holidays,

The MUN Planning Team

POSITION PAPERS!

Hello World!
Position papers are due today! Position papers represent the perspective of each delegate's country in the position of it's government on the topics of their assigned committees. Delegates write two position papers total, so the first one was due today. There are two topics out of about five that the delegates choose to write about for each respective committee. Again, the committees are:
General Assembly 1 and 2
Global Security
Human Rights
Health and Human Services
Global Economics
Environment

For more information of how to write a position paper for (Oregon) MUN, click here: http://oregonmun.org. This site gives you a step-by-step process of what to write and the requirement for a position paper!

It was the first time that we graded the delegates position papers for all of us on the planning team, besides Jack, a returning member of the MUN planning team from last year.

One of our members, Emily Kelly, states, "I think its really interesting to hear what other people have to say and its a great way to learn about other countries and policies on diverse topics. It's a really good way to figure out how all of our delegates are doing and how much they understand."

Currently, hard at work!

The Start of a New Year

The Start of a New Year
Hello world! We are the LOHS MUN Planning Team. This year we will be taking 100+ kids down to Eugene, Oregon for the annual Model United Nations Conference in April. We have just started the work necessary for this endeavor. Our goal as a group is to increase awareness of world issues and encourage positive, non-violent resolutions to these problems. With this, we hope to engage young people with the world around them and promote a global worldview, rather than just the American perspective.

Position Papers should start coming in for us to read in a couple of weeks. These position papers represent the perspective of each delegate's country on the topics of their respective committees. Committees include:
General Assembly 1 and 2
Global Security
Human Rights
Health and Human Services
Global Economics
Environment

Students choose their committee based upon their interests and then further explore the issues in the committees through their position papers. They will be working toward an eventual resolution to the problem, which will then be debated in April. Resolutions will be discussed in a later blog post.

The key to organization for our planning team is the massive, all-encompassing binder. It keeps all of our papers, applications, and lists together in one place. Then, when different members of the planning team embark on various activities, such as copying, blogging, emailing, calling, etc., the materials return to one specified place. For instance, with the rapid influx of applications at the beginning of the year, we alphabetized them and placed them in the binder. This saved us organizational head-aches when we compiled email lists and facebook groups.
